CEREDIGION DIGITAL INCLUSION

Recently we have met with other training providers in Ceredigion (Ymlaen Ceredigion, Culture Net, Penparcau Adult Community Education Centre and Hafal Social Activity Club) to discuss the provision of digital training and resources in the local area and Phoenix Cymru has been asked to deliver a pilot project working with 5 community groups and training them to generate their own digital stories and on line tutorials.

This pilot project, will then feed into a future project of developing an on line “community digital television channel”, with it’s own unique and recognizable style and image. It will have the capacity to draw in interest from local business and voluntary organisations as well as having a global audience potential.

The underlying objective is to promote social inclusion and raise the capacity and skills of the residents of the Aberystwyth and Penparcau Community First area.

Through this project we will enable the following outcomes:

  1. Facilitate the process of cascade training and build capacity in the area;
  2. Increase awareness of learning opportunities;
  3. Develop synergy with local business and voluntary organisations;
  4. Local history, skills, information and tutorials will be recorded for posterity and, finally;
  5. An on going monitoring of local demand for training requirements will be maintained.

The training will be delivered to a minimum of 25 and maximum of 40 people made up from 5 local community groups (such as older disabled under represented people) and by the end of the 24 weeks, they will have been taught how to record their own history, share their stories and create special interest tutorials in a digital format. The material created will be relative to a theme or interest the group have e.g. mental health awareness; traditional local skills; a guide to composting; global citizenship and how to build your own computer. The content will be 5 films of between 2 – 6 minutes in length and they will all have a common identity, which will make them unique to the area and the local community.

An experienced multi media trainer will work closely with 5 community groups, mentoring them and helping them create their digital productions. The intensity of the training is designed to maximise learning and ensure skills are embedded for future cascading of knowledge within the community.

The training will cover story boarding and script writing; digital audio recording and narration; image and filming capture – lighting and angles; editing digital images and video; finalising and uploading the production to a web based channel. The training will give the beneficiaries a chance to practise the skills learned in between workshop sessions, create an informal learning environment and learn new skills.

The eventual goal is to create an on line Ceredigion Community Digital Television Channel where every aspect of community life, learning and development could be broadcasted. We are currently in the “You Tube” generation and you hear in the news daily of “user generated content” “citizen journalism” “authentic media” and this project will open the doors for the community to learn how to create, publish and exploit these skills to their advantage.
